Arts Week takes place annually in the spring term. In recent years the children have enjoyed the following themes:
2024 – Sustainability
We have had a very thought-provoking week learning about all aspects of Sustainability. Our Eco Warriors launched the week by introducing “The Big Plastic Count” to all the school which is a nationwide initiative to get schools, businesses and community groups to count their plastic waste.
The children have looked at the UN’s 17 Sustainable Goals and the older classes have debated the complex balance between the need to protect our environment, the importance of having a strong economy and for social equity. Classes have studied the effects of globalisation and resulting pollution and inequality in other countries as well as our own. We were very lucky to have Laura Piety come and speak about the documentary ‘The True Cost’, that she helped make, about the Fashion Industry.
In Art, classes have created artwork solely from found natural materials, built bird feeders from recycled water bottles and juice cartons, melted plastic bags creating “plastic fabric” which will be made into bags and phone cases.
Many groups have looked at recyclable energy sources and inequality of access to power, with Year 5 designing and building wind turbines in their DT lesson. Classes have also calculated their carbon footprint, sorted and counted recyclables, counted and planted seeds, analysed water conservation and calculated energy efficiency. A very busy week indeed!
